Adding background music

Beginning in June, this tool will no longer be available on Spotify for Podcasters mobile and web experiences. Read more here.

Spotify for Podcasters’s smart background music fades in and out dynamically with your recordings to provide a smooth transition at the beginning and end of your audio segments.

On web:

  1. Go to your episode builder
  2. Use the Record tab to record new audio, or Library to find pre-recorded segments.
  3. After your recording is saved, you’ll see a music note button that will allow you to add background music to your recording.
  4. Select a music category, then search for and preview our background music tracks.
  5. To hear how your audio sounds with a background track, select a background track, then click Preview with your audio.
  6. Use the scroll bar to set your selected music to the desired volume.
  7. When you’re happy, click Apply.

Your original recording will be preserved as a copy, and a new audio segment with background music will also be saved in your audio library.

Note: When previewing your audio, background music will dynamically fade-in before your audio starts. Once you save the finished audio, background music will both fade in at the beginning, and fade out at the end.

On the mobile app:

  1. Go to Tools and tap the + icon.
  2. Tap Library to add background music to a pre-recorded segment.
  3. Tap the 3 dots next to a recording, then Add background music.
  4. Search our catalog of background music tracks. Tap the play icon to preview the track, and + to add it to your recording.

If you have your own music that you explicitly own the rights to, you can also tap Import at step 4 to add it as a background track.

Tips for using background music

  • You can replace or remove background music from a segment at any time by editing the segment in your audio library.
  • Adjusting the volume of selected background music can currently only be done on the web version of Spotify for Podcasters.
  • If your segment is already in a published episode, any changes made to background music will be reflected on external platforms within approximately 24 hours.
  • Background tracks are added to the full audio segment. If you'd like to add music to just part of a recording, you may want to split your audio segment into multiple parts.
  • Try using background music to add texture to your episodes, whether as an intro track, a way to emphasize specific moments or topics, or anything else you can think of!
